I should start this review by first explaining that my overall experience with audio is very little, however probably more than most casual users/buyers, as anyone would with a touch of audio brand knowlege will know the names of JBL and SVS, I own a pair of studio monitors from JBL and own an SB1000 entry level sub from SVS. My previous dac was intergrated inside an "Onyx Producer 2.2 Audio Interface" so I have that to compare it to at least.
I will be comparing this to the "Onyx" - £100 & Hyper X Gaming Headset Dac/Amp (nothing special)
Also the Schitt Modi 3 and ATOM by JDS Labs (not the plus version) by my Audiophile friend.
So if you were expecting a review from a turbo audiophile I'm sorry to say this is not for you, however if you are someone taking a dip in the large pond of audio gear and have had relatively cheap or all in one solutions below the £120 mk read on.
Build -
Exceptional, as described on Electromod UK - "it's a solid block of aluminium" etc. Initially I was surprised with how heavy the unit was despite being almost tiny though it never felt too heavy, more of that weighty feel on products that you know are built to last and can survive a drop (though I would never recommend it).
The display is easy to read and the brightness can be adjusted easily (more on that in a bit) though on my unit there is just the tiniest light bleed that you can see from the left side of the panel which can be distracting for those who are perfectionists but ultimately doesn't harm an otherwise elegant display.
The stick used to control the dB and menu's feels cheap by comparison, which feels more plastic than metal, a shame given the rest of build feels sturdy and weighty but otherwise matches the colour and doesn't detract from otherwise a solid build.
Sound:
Clean... very clean, upon switching from a simple gaming headphone intergrated dac amp combo, I used the very same headphones (£70 at most) on the same test tracks to which my face produced a big grin, It was noticable, especially using Flac files and raising the volume, even on lower quality mp3s on Spotify the sound was smooth but didn't drop resolution or quality, it's tough to tell through cheap headphones but if anything I saw an improvement in sound resolution on tracks such as "Western Call" by Cody Francis, the very subtle strings in the beginning were now far more detectable.
Another noticable difference was how pleasantly smooth the sound was, this is extremely hard to describe but I wouldn't call it warm though maybe the previous dac/amp combo was just so bright sounding (sharp). To compare how it felt I will use a silly analogy I described to my audiophile friend, it was like going from dragging my hands through sharp rocks on a cliff side to dragging it through a bowl of warm custard, again I should stress the sound was never gooey or any other characteristic but rather strictly far more pleasent than previously.
!Attention! - I should stress so far that I was using both the D50s and A50s (the paring amp stack) for the headphones comparison which the amp may or may not have affected the sound as well, Why? because the speakers using the DAC but with the amp as pre-out only, really only accentuated what I heard and it was brilliant.
Comparisons:
I left this to my audiophile friend who has ample experience on a large range of headphone equipment. Because this is his account rather then mine I will keep this brief.
Onyx vs D50s - D50s is better in everyway for miles and then some.
Modi 3 vs D50s - A harder comparison though he did prefer the sound on the D50s he described the modi as being warmer with a tad less resolution.
JDS Atom vs D50s - D50s had the higher resolution though though he enjoyed the sound signature of both.
Conculsion:
I will not make comments to the comparision as it was not of my own thoughts, but to summazie, a very high quality beautiful DAC with a handful of connection possibilites and dB options, an easy to use menu and stick combo and a substaintial improvement of sound clarity and feel over sub £100 options described (if you've got the ears for it)
The value for money is a little hard to justify though, yes it's great and it performs very well? but I have no doubt that similar options for £250 without the bluetooth (that i don't use) can get you even better quality sound. All in all I am very happy to own this DAC but I'd say the price is a little steep. If you can grab this for £220 or less than I think you're getting a very good deal on it. Though unless you plan to use the bluetooth alot or pair it with the A50s amp in a stack it'd say wait for a sale.

Out of the box its heft for such a small DAC speaks volumes as to the build quality. Yes as some people have noted the BT antenna is quite loose; not so loose that it can't hold its position though and as long as it does that what more do you need. Powering it off a relatively low end switching supply I have to crank my amp (M6SI) to full tilt (220wpc) before hearing any particular background noise; no my hearing is actually quite decent. I have no wish to criticise other reviewers so merely observe that if you power any DAC from a dirty USB source or connect it direct to a PC then you will inevitably get unwanted noise but it is not the fault of the DAC.
As to performance. Well after a couple of hours listening I'm delighted with it. Left on filter 1 it has a very clean presentation with a wide sound-stage. Now I run my M6SI into monitor audios and it may be more clinical with a more different system but I found it an engaging and easy listen. After a whirlwind tour through many musical genres, Chase & Status to the Misshaped Pearls via Pentagram and others, I finished with Blue Train and my efforts at being analytical stopped there with my feet tapping away joyfully.
In short it's a brilliant bit of kit for the money.
Why 4 stars. Well I've left room to bump it up a bit after more extended listening :)
